The Everest Carnival includes numerous events, however, the most fruitful are The Everest, The Kosciuszko, King Charles III Stakes, the Golden Eagle, and the Five Diamonds. The headline is of course The Everest itself; the 'richest turf race in the world' run over 1,200 metre at Randwick on Everest Day with The Kosciuszko and the King Charles III Stakes. And as of 2024 was elevated to Group 1 status. The Everest carnival plays out over multiple major race-days at Randwick and Rosehill, and features a mix of sprint and middle-distance contests, new mega-prize races and strong support fields.

The Everest carnival’s popularity stems from the combination of elite racing and a high-energy, social atmosphere. Big prize money, international interest and the “slot-race” model of The Everest have captured the attention of all thoroughbred fans. Equally, the spring timing, the fashion, lifestyle and hospitality elements make it attractive to a broad audience beyond traditional racing fans.

A landmark moment came with the inaugural running of The Everest in 2017, it immediately positioned Sydney’s spring carnival on the world map of racing. More recently, the 2024 Everest Carnival had record crowds and more than $85 million in prize money across the carnival. That moment underscored the transformation of the spring carnival from a strong local event to a globally recognised spectacle. 

The Sydney Spring Racing Carnival (Spring)

While the Everest Carnival is very much the flagship, the Spring Carnival more broadly includes a number of important race-days across August to November in Sydney. 

Key races in the spring carnival include the Epsom Handicap, the Golden Rose Stakes, and the Spring Champion Stakes, alongside The Everest and the aforementioned carnival’s races. The programme covers both Randwick and Rosehill, and features sprints, middle-distance and staying races for a variety of age groups. One of the key event days is Golden Eagle Day where alongside that thrilling event, the Russell Balding Stakes and the Rosehill Gold Cup. As such, the spring carnival serves as a major theatre for form building, for horses aiming at the Melbourne spring races, and for trainers showcasing talent. The popularity of the spring series arises from its breadth and ambition. For racing fans and casual visitors alike, the spring carnival offers a mix of serious sport and high-profile lifestyle. It’s not just the horses: the entertainment, fashion and hospitality uplift the experience significantly. 

One pivotal moment was the decision to substantially remodel the spring carnival around The Everest (after 2017) and to introduce additional big-money races such as The Big Dance. This shift marked the spring carnival’s elevation from strong to world class.

The Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival (Autumn)

As the racing calendar gradually builds up again after summer, Sydney’s autumn carnival takes centre stage, largely during March and April. The autumn carnival includes some of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious races often run either at Rosehill or Randwick; the Golden Slipper Stakes for two-year-olds, the Sydney Cup, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and others. The autumn carnival is often described as the ‘premier time of year’ for Sydney racing given the stacking of Group 1s and the strength of fields. Its appeal lies in a combination of tradition and top-level competition. The Golden Slipper, for example, is an iconic juvenile race and generates huge interest. One of the key events is The Championships marquee event held over 2 days with the Doncaster Mile, T.J. Smith Stakes, and others. The autumn carnival draws big stables from across Australia and overseas, and serves as both a prize-target in its own right and a springboard or finale for horses. For fans, the autumn carnival delivers quality, depth and drama.

One defining moment came when the carnival introduced the two-day format for The Championships — titled as the ‘Grand Finals of Australian Racing’ — which gave the autumn carnival a major structure and spotlight. Also, recent winners such as the mare Via Sistina achieving multiple Group 1 wins during the autumn carnival underscore its prominence.
