He was so dominant that he was assigned an enormous weight (62.5 kg), yet still won convincingly. His Melbourne Cup victory came in the middle of a 14-race winning streak, and he remains a national icon.

2. Makybe Diva’s Third Consecutive Melbourne Cup Win (2005)

In 2005, Makybe Diva became the first and only horse to win three Melbourne Cups (2003, 2004, 2005). She carried 58 kg, the highest weight for a mare in the race’s history, yet still stormed home to an unforgettable victory. Her legendary three-peat solidified her status as one of the greatest stayers ever.

3. The First Ever Melbourne Cup (1861)

The very first Melbourne Cup, held on November 7, 1861, was won by Archer, who reportedly walked over 800 km from Nowra, NSW, to compete. The prize for winning? A gold watch and £710, far less than today’s $8 million+ prize pool! This race began the tradition of ‘stopping the nation’ making the Melbourne Cup Australia’s most famous sporting event.
