Winterbottom Stakes.

How to bet on the Winterbottom Stakes with Bet Right
The Winterbottom Stakes is Western Australia’s premier sprint feature and a highlight of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival. It’s a Group 1 weight-for-age race held each November at Ascot Racecourse in Perth over 1,200 metres, open to three-year-olds and older. First run in 1952, when the winner was Raconteur, it was initially contested over longer distances (around 1,400 metres) before being reduced to its current sprint length in 1994. The race was a Principal event, then Group 2 from 1979, and elevated to Group 1 status in 2011. With prize money now at approximately $1.5 million, it draws both elite local sprinters and interstate raiders.
As part of the summer carnival, the Winterbottom Stakes sits mid-weekend in November, following lead-ups like the Colonel Reeves Stakes and Prince of Wales Stakes, and preceding races such as the Kingston Town Classic. It often serves as a proving ground for sprinters finishing up strong campaigns from the spring, or for rising stars gearing up for other big sprints. The weight-for-age conditions ensure it rewards both speed and class.
One of its most memorable editions came in 2008, in a thrilling finish where Takeover Target edged out Apache Cat by a nose. That clash between two of Australia’s best sprinters has gone down in history as one of the great duels, underlining the race’s capacity to deliver drama and top-class performance.
