It is run over 1,300 metres under set weights & penalties and is open to horses aged three years and older. First run in 2019, it was originally called the Winners Stakes (with its name changing each year after the previous year’s The Everest winner) until being renamed permanently in 2024 to honour former Racing NSW Chairman Russell Balding.
The race carries a prize pool of $3 million, making it one of the richest non-Group 1 races on the calendar. While not yet a Group 1, its status and timing—just after The Everest and on one of the biggest racing days in Sydney—mean it draws a strong field of sprinters and speedy middle-distance horses. It has quickly become a key part of the spring racing schedule, both for form lines and betting interest.
A defining moment in its young history came in 2024, when Bella Nipotina became the first horse to win back-to-back editions of the race, doing so after also winning The Everest. Her performance underlined the race’s evolution into a true litmus test for elite sprinters; sitting behind the leaders early before powering home, she pulled away late to claim a two-length victory. The win also catapulted her into second place on the all-time Australian prize money list, trailing only Winx.
