When is the Brownlow Medal awarded?
Each year, the accolade is awarded on the Monday evening of the AFL Grand Final Week in September. This year it will be the 21st of September 2026.
How is the recipient of the Brownlow medal determined?
The four field umpires present in a home-and-away game will confer after its conclusion, and collectively decide to award 3 votes to the player they deem the best in that match, 2 votes to the perceived second-best, and 1 vote to the believed third-best. This procedure will occur at the conclusion of every match by the relevant officiating field umpires and the total vote count for each player is calculated towards the end of the season.
What makes a player ineligible for consideration?
If a player is suspended by the AFL Tribunal during the home-and-away season, he will not be allowed to win the Brownlow Medal, regardless of how many votes he may have received.
