The Toorak Handicap, taking place on the second Saturday of October, is a prestigious 1600-metre race that welcomes horses of all ages. With a prize pool of $1 million, the winner stands to claim a substantial $600,000 at Caulfield Racecourse. First run in 1881, where a horse named Josephine claimed victory, the race has undergone several name changes over the years before becoming known as the Toorak in 1990. The race holds additional allure with the possibility of securing a $1 million bonus if the winner also triumphs in the Cox Plate. Since 2005, four-year-olds have been particularly successful in this event, dominating the winner’s circle. However, mares have generally struggled to make an impact, with the last mare to win being More Joyous in 2010.
