The race covers a distance of 2400 metres and is open to horses aged three years and older. Originally run over 3200 metres, the distance was later reduced to its current length. The total prize pool for the race is $750,000, with the winner receiving $430,000. The Metropolitan is also part of the Rosehill Gold Cup Scheme, further enhancing its prestige. This race holds a key position in the spring racing calendar, serving as a crucial lead-up to other major staying events.

The race previously held Group 1 status, but ahead of the 2026 running, it was demoted to Group 2. The Asian Racing Federation requested changes to The Metropolitan's racing conditions in order for the event to retain its Group 1 badge. Initially, Racing NSW agreed to this and submitted a proposal to the Asian Pattern Committee. However, they later bowed out, and the following APC meeting resulted in the downgrading decision.
