1. The First Ever Hobart Cup (1875)

The Hobart Cup, Tasmania’s most prestigious race, was first run in 1875 and has since become a Group 3 staying race over 2400m. Over the years, it has been won by some top-class stayers, including Brunton's Bridge (1948) and Geegees Blackflash (2012, 2015). The Hobart Cup & Launceston Cup double remains the ultimate achievement in Tasmanian racing.

2. Sydeston’s Hobart Cup Victory (1990)

Champion Tasmanian-bred stayer Sydeston won the 1990 Hobart Cup, marking the start of a sensational year. He went on to win the Caulfield Cup later that year, proving that Tasmanian horses could compete at the highest level on the mainland. Sydeston remains one of Tasmania’s greatest-ever racehorses.

3.The Revamp of Elwick Racecourse & New Facilities (2004-2005)

In 2004-05, Hobart Racecourse (Elwick) underwent a major redevelopment, transforming it into one of Australia’s most modern provincial tracks. The upgrades included a new grandstand, improved track conditions, and better spectator facilities, boosting the prestige of Tasmanian racing. Since then, the track has continued to produce quality horses that have gone on to shine in mainland racing.
