Originally known as the Freeway Stakes, the race was renamed in honour of the legendary sprinter Manikato, who won the event in 1979 and 1982 and claimed the William Reid Stakes five times consecutively. This prestigious race, part of the Victorian Spring Carnival, is run over a distance of 1,200 metres (approximately 6 furlongs). The prize money was recently increased to $2 million, with the winner receiving $1.2 million. As one of the premier events leading up to the Melbourne Cup, the Manikato Stakes attracts top sprinters from across Australia and beyond.
