The VRC Oaks is one of the signature staying tests of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is a Group 1 race run under set-weights conditions over 2,500 metres at Flemington Racecourse, exclusively for three-year-old fillies. Held each year on the Thursday following the Melbourne Cup in early November (Oaks Day), it carries prize money of $1,000,000.
First contested in 1861, the VRC Oaks was won by Palestine. For over a century it was run over roughly 2,400 metres until in 1973 the distance was extended to 2,500 metres under metrication and course layout changes. Up until 1979 it was classed as a Principal Race before being elevated to Group 1 status.
The race acts as the premier staying classic for three-year-old fillies, often serving as the culmination of their spring campaigns. It is the fillies’ counterpart to the Victoria Derby (which is over the same distance but open to both sexes), making it a key aim for connections seeking enduring performance over staying distances. Lead-in races like the Wakeful Stakes (2,000m) are traditionally important form guides.
One of its most memorable editions came in 2016, when Lasqueti Spirit shocked the field at roughly 100-1 odds by leading nearly all the way, at some stages by more than ten lengths, to claim a stirring victory. That performance remains one of the great upsets in the Oaks’ long history and underscores how demanding and unpredictable the 2,500-metre test can be.
