The Epsom Handicap is one of Australia’s most prestigious Group 1 mile handicap races, held annually in early October over a 1600 metre course at Royal Randwick. Open to horses aged three years and older, it has been a Group 1 race since 1979 and is renowned as one of the great mile events in Australian racing. First run in 1863, the inaugural race was won by a horse named Dundee. The race takes its name from the Epsom Downs Racecourse in England, home of the famous Epsom Derby. While it has traditionally been a 1600m race, it briefly extended to 1800m in 1879. With a prize pool of $1.5 million, the winner receives $870,000 and an exemption from the ballot for the following year’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Horses carrying lighter weights have historically performed better, with no horse carrying more than 57 kg winning since 1991. The race has seen six back-to-back winners, most recently Desert War in 2004 and 2005.
