A quinella is a racing exotic where you pick the two horses that finish first and second in any order. Because order does not matter, it is one of the simplest exotics to win, which makes it a great entry point for punters stepping up from win and place bets.

How a quinella works

To win a quinella you select two horses, and both must finish first and second in either order. It does not matter which of your two horses wins, as long as they fill the top two placings. A quinella is a tote bet with its own pool, so the dividend is declared after the race.

Quinella versus exacta

This is the question most punters have, and the difference is simply about order.

Quinella: two horses, first and second in any order.

Exacta: two horses, first and second in the correct order.

A single quinella on two horses is one bet. To get the same any-order cover with an exacta you would box it, which costs two units. The exacta usually pays more for the extra difficulty, while the quinella is cheaper and easier to land.

Boxing a quinella

You can add more horses to a quinella to widen your cover. The bet then wins if any two of your selections fill the first two placings.

Combinations in a quinella:

2 horses = 1 combination

3 horses = 3 combinations

4 horses = 6 combinations

How to bet a quinella on Bet Right

  1. Open the race and choose the quinella option.
  2. Select two or more horses to fill the first two placings in any order.
  3. Set your stake, or use flexi betting for wider selections.
  4. Check the combinations and total cost on the bet slip.
  5. Confirm. The bet settles to the declared tote dividend if two of your horses run first and second.

Quinella FAQs

Do my horses have to finish in order?

No. That is the key feature of a quinella. Your two horses can finish first and second in any order.

Is a quinella easier than a trifecta?

Yes. You only need the first two horses, in any order, rather than the first three in exact order like a trifecta.

Where can I place one?

On any race with a quinella pool, alongside the other tote exotics on Bet Right.
