Over/under betting, also called totals, is one of the simplest markets in sport. Instead of picking a winner, you bet on whether the combined score of both teams will land above or below a number the bookmaker sets. It is a great option when you have a read on how a game will flow but not on who will win.

How over/under betting works

The bookmaker posts a total, for example 45.5 points. You bet the over if you think the combined score will be higher, or the under if you think it will be lower. Only the total score matters, not which team scores it.

Example. Total set at 45.5 points.

Final combined score 50: the over wins. Final combined score 40: the under wins.

The number is the whole story

Because you are betting on the combined score, the things that drive scoring matter most: pace, weather, defensive quality and the style of the teams. A windy day or two strong defences point to the under, while two attacking teams in good form point to the over.

What is a push?

push happens when the combined score lands exactly on a whole-number total, and the bet is usually refunded. Most totals use a half-point, such as 45.5, so there is always a clear over or under. Check the rules on your bet slip.

Totals across different sports

The unit changes with the sport, but the idea is identical: total points in the AFL and NBA, total runs in MLB, and total goals in soccer and the NHL.

How to place an over/under bet on Bet Right

  1. Open the match and find the total points, runs or goals market.
  2. Choose over or under the posted number.
  3. Check the total and the price on the bet slip.
  4. Enter your stake and confirm.

Over/under betting FAQs

Does it matter who wins?

No. Over/under only depends on the combined score of both teams.

What happens if the score lands on the total?

On a whole-number total that is a push, and the bet is usually refunded. Half-point totals avoid this.

What drives whether a game goes over or under?

Pace, weather, defensive quality and team style are the main factors.

Pair this with line betting to read both the margin and the score of a game.
