Australian Rules is the most bet-on football code in the country, and the range of markets reflects it. You can keep it simple by backing a team to win, or get into the detail by picking the first goalkicker or the winning margin. This guide walks through the main AFL betting markets and how to place your first bet.

Popular AFL betting markets

Head to head

The simplest bet: pick which team will win the match. If the scores finish level, the market rules determine how the bet is settled, so check the terms shown on the game.

Line betting

One team is given a points start (for example minus 18.5) to even up the contest. The favourite must win by more than the line, while the underdog can lose by less than the line or win outright. Learn more in our guide to line betting.

Total points (over/under)

Bet on whether the combined points scored by both teams will be over or under a set number. Weather and venue can push scoring up or down, so it pays to check conditions. See over/under betting explained.

First and anytime goalscorer

Back a player to kick the first goal of the match, or to kick a goal at any time. Anytime markets are shorter priced because there are more ways to win.

Winning margin

Pick the bracket your team will win within, for example one to 39 points. The narrower the bracket, the bigger the price.

Same Game Multi

Combine several markets from the one match, such as the result, total points and a goalscorer, into a single bet. See how to place a Same Game Multi.

How to place an AFL bet on Bet Right

  1. Open the AFL match you want to bet on.
  2. Choose your market, such as head to head, line or total points.
  3. Select your team or player.
  4. Enter your stake and review the price, shown in decimal odds. See how to read fixed odds.
  5. Confirm the bet on your slip.

Tips for betting on AFL

  • Check the late team news. Ins and outs announced close to the bounce can change a market.
  • Weather matters. Wet weather usually lowers scoring, which is worth weighing on totals.
  • In lopsided games, the line can offer better value than a very short head-to-head price.
  • Set a budget before you start and stick to it.

Key AFL competitions and events

The AFL home-and-away season runs from March to August, with the finals series in September and the Grand Final at the MCG. Beyond match betting, popular futures markets include the premiership, the Brownlow Medal and the Coleman Medal for the leading goalkicker. Betting interest builds through the finals, when margins tighten and line betting comes into its own. If you are new to futures, they are simply longer-term bets placed before or during the season on a season-long outcome.
